Report: China’s annual hydrogen energy production and consumption scale ranked first in the world in 2024

China’s National Energy Administration (NEA) released the China Hydrogen Energy Development Report (2025) on April 28,

showing that in 2024, China’s annual production and consumption scale of hydrogen energy exceeds 36.5 million tons,

ranking first in the world.

Xu Jilin, deputy director of the Department of Energy Conservation and Science and Technology Equipment of China’s National

Energy Administration, said at a press conference on April 28 to introduce the report that in 2024, China’s annual production

and consumption scale of hydrogen energy exceeded 36.5 million tons, ranking first in the world. By the end of 2024, the global

renewable energy hydrogen project cumulative built capacity of more than 250,000 tons / year, China accounted for more

than 50%, has gradually become the world’s renewable energy hydrogen and related industrial development of leading countries.
The Report points out that in 2024, with science and technology innovation as the leader, and industrial scale and commercialization

as the goal, China’s hydrogen energy production, storage, transportation, and utilization of the whole chain of key technologies

gradually made breakthroughs. A number of large-scale renewable energy hydrogen projects in Xinjiang Kuche and Ningxia

Nindong have been completed and operated, linking the whole process of renewable hydrogen production – storage and

transportation – utilization, and playing a better demonstration role. The demonstration application of fuel cell vehicles has been

steadily promoted, with more than 540 hydrogen refueling stations built around the world, and about 24,000 fuel cell vehicles

promoted; more than 15,000 fuel cell vehicles have been promoted in the five regions of Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei, Shanghai, Guangdong,

Zhengzhou and Hebei. A number of fuel cell power generation and cogeneration projects have been put into operation; the F-class

50 MW heavy-duty gas turbine has completed the test of 30% hydrogen doping in the combustor, and the megawatt-class pure

hydrogen gas turbine has completed the test verification of the whole machine. At the same time, six hydrogen energy technologies

and equipment were selected as the fourth batch of the first (sets) of major technologies and equipment in the field of energy by

the National Energy Administration, covering the whole chain of hydrogen energy production, storage, transportation and utilization.
